Roche Winery Chardonnay Named Best Wine in Sonoma and Napa
North Coast Wine Challenge Declares Roche Reserve Chardonnay “Best of the Best” in Sonoma, Napa and Neighboring Wine Growing Regions
SONOMA, CA, April 24, 2015 – Family-owned and operated Roche Winery & Vineyards was awarded the highest honor as it received the “Best of the Best” Award at the prestigious 2015 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge. The 2013 Roche Carneros French Oak Reserve Chardonnay received 99 points out of 100 and was also awarded “Best of Sonoma County” and “Best of Show White” from the judging panel in addition to be honored as this year’s top wine in the entire competition among over 1,050 entries from Napa, Sonoma and neighboring wine growing regions in the North Coast (.
“My family is so pleased with this honor,” said Brendan Roche, Managing Partner. “We are especially happy for our winemaker, Michael Carr, who received this award on his 20th year of making wine for Roche Winery, and of course, for our long-time customers who have always loved our wines and supported our family’s business.”
This “Best of the Best” Award received by Roche Winery is a true honor as the North Coast Wine Challenge is considered to be the premier wine competition located in the heart of the some of the world’s finest vineyards. Only wineries from select California North Coast AVAs are permitted to participate including those producing wines with their main source of grapes exclusively from Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Marin and parts of Solano counties. The 2013 Roche Carneros French Oak Reserve Chardonnay was awarded the best wine in all of those regions combined.
“Top wines received prestigious rankings of Best of Class by Category, Best of County and ultimately one wine won the Best of the Best Award. The Roche Chardonnay was the stand-out at this year’s event. Judges described it as ‘…the perfect chardonnay. A slam dunk favorite with all the judges. This wine really rocks!!’” according to 2015 North Coast Wine Challenge Competition Director Debra Del Fiorentino.
Michael Carr, the Roche Winemaker, has helped to bring over twenty-three (23) Gold Medals, Double Golds, Best of Class and now “Best of the Best” awards to Roche in just the last six years. When asked about receiving this 99 point rating, Michael said, “It is a fantastic honor to receive such an award from a competition that is comparing wines from a specific region of California. We, as a winemaking team, strive to produce the best wines we can every year and it appears that we have made a wine that appeals as well to a group of judges comprised of sommeliers, winemakers, restaurateurs and media.” Michael continued, “I love to drink Chardonnay as much as I enjoy making it and want to make the best wines I can, and it’s nice to be recognized for our efforts in producing a really nice Chardonnay.” Toby Laba, Roche’s Assistant Winemaker, also contributed greatly to the production of the 2013 Carneros French Oak Reserve Chardonnay.
When Joseph Roche, co-founder of Roche Winery, was informed of the “Best of the Best” judge’s decision, he had this to say, “We are just so proud of Michael Carr, our winemaking team, and of our entire staff. Michael started at our family’s winery 20 years ago as an intern while still receiving his enology training at UC Davis and has been instrumental to take our family’s wines to the next level. I encourage all visitors to the wine country to visit our family’s downtown Sonoma tasting room to taste our limited production, Gold Medal wines.” Joseph also added, “I know my wife Genevieve, unfortunately who did not live to receive this ‘Best of the Best’ honor, would have also been extremely proud of this accomplishment.”
In commenting how he expects this notoriety may affect the current operations of the winery, Brendan Roche added, “This win provides a great boost to our family and team here at the winery as we embark on our planned construction of a new state-of-the-art Carneros winery, which is needed to service the current demand and future growth of our wine club and customer base.” The Roche family plans to build a new 30,000 case production facility with construction to begin this year.
The founders of Roche Winery, Joseph and Genevieve Roche, first planted grapes in southern Sonoma in 1982 and their family’s winery has been in continuous operation since 1989. Now run by the second-generation of Roche family members including Brendan, Mara, Carrie and Sara Roche, the family moved their tasting room to downtown Sonoma in 2009 back when there were only three tasting rooms on the Sonoma Plaza. The Roche Tasting Room is thriving downtown and continues to serve visitors 363 days per year as customers may sip the family’s wines at one of several outdoor or indoor bars or next to the cozy fire pit facing the vibrant Sonoma Square.
This “Best of the Best” 2013 Carneros French Oak Reserve Chardonnay is available exclusively for sale at the family’s tasting room or by phoning or emailing the winery staff. The family continues to sell its wines only at their tasting room or through their wine club. Their wines are not sold in stores. Customers who sign up for or who are already enrolled in the Roche family’s wine club, The Carneros Club, have an opportunity to receive a bottle of the awarded 2013 Carneros French Oak Reserve Chardonnay in their club package. As just one of the many benefits active Roche club members receive, Carneros Club members may always re-order award-winning wines offered through the winery’s club.
About Roche Winery & Vineyards LLC
Roche Winery is a family-run, Sonoma boutique winery with vineyards located in the acclaimed Los Carneros appellation just 35 minutes north of San Francisco. The family limits production to approximately 9,000 – 12,000 cases per year and does not sell its wines to stores. Instead, Roche only makes its handcrafted wines available for purchase directly from their tasting room, through the winery’s wine club, or offered at a handful of local restaurants. In 1982, the winery’s founders, Dr. Joseph and Dr. Genevieve Roche, planted their first grapes (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). The family’s original tasting room was constructed in 1989 and later moved to historic downtown Sonoma in 2009. Currently, the winery and vineyards are operated by the second generation of the Roche family including Brendan, Mara, Carrie and Sara as well as by the original founder and their father, Joseph Roche. The winemaker, Michael Carr, who has been with the winery for more than 20 years, continues to make the family’s high-quality, award-winning wines including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah among others.
