Our History


     

1890s – 1960s An Irish-American Farming Tradition Begins

John Roche and John Donlon, both Irish citizens whom immigrated to America as young men may have not known each other, but it was their knowledge of farming that helped create the wonderful wines Roche customers enjoy today…In 1952, after an accomplished career as an FBI Agent, John Jr. and his wife Gerry, purchased an avocado orchard in the hills of La Habra, California. >>Learn more

     

1960s – Joseph & Genevieve meet in medical school, are married, and settle in San Francisco.

While both attending Creighton Medical School in Nebraska, Joe and Genevieve meet while training to become Pathologists. After graduating, they got married and settled in San Francisco where Joseph took a Pathologist position with St. Mary’s Hospital and Genevieve began her work as a Pathologist at Mary’s Help Hospital. >>Learn more

     

1970s – Roche’s family grows and moves to Sonoma Valley

While living in San Francisco, Joseph and Genevieve longed for a simpler life outside of the city. Having both been raised in farming families, they wanted the same for their young children, and they began their search for a farm in Sonoma County. >>Learn more

     

1980s – First vines are planted and a winery is founded

Even though the Joe and Genevieve raised fine beef cattle, their dreams of owning a vineyard never ceased. In 1982, while having a casual conversation with an established grape grower in the valley, they learned their property could possibly be a fine area to grow grapes. They didn’t need much convincing, in the fall of that same year, the Roches planted 10 acres of Chardonnay and 10 acres of Pinot Noir. >>Learn more

     

1990s –Roche’s embrace direct sales, expand vineyards and hire a graduate of UC Davis named Michael Carr

Not long after opening their winery in 1989, Joe and Genevieve quickly grew tired of the stressful world of distributing their wines across the United States. It involved too much traveling and time away from home and often times they were forced to discount their wines heavily. In 1990, the Roches decided to change their business plan and cut their production and focus on selling their wine direct to their customers. >>Learn more

     

2000s – Joe & Genevieve hand reigns to the 2nd Generation, the 3rd Generation is born, Roche Winery Moves

Ever since opening the doors of Roche Winery, Joe and Genveive had always exposed their children to every aspect of running the winery and they have always focused on keeping this a family-run winery. In the 20+ years Roche Winery has been making wine, customers have been able to watch the Roche Family and Winery grow together. Those rambunctious Roche children and teenagers in 1989 are now managing the day to day operations in the vineyard and winery. >>Learn more

     

2010 and beyond – New winery & hospitality center planned, Roche Sonoma Plaza tasting room a new “hot spot.”

Already one of the most popular new spots in the downtown Sonoma Square, the new Roche Winery tasting room is housed in a lovely 1940s craftsman style building that offers a relaxed environment for both indoor and outdoor tasting. Customers are be able to taste the family’s award winning wine at the indoor bar, while seated and relaxing on the porch overlooking the square, beside the outdoor fireplace, or at comfortable outdoor tables on the shaded patio while taking in all of the action of downtown Sonoma. >>Learn more
